Cast your mind back if you can to 1978 - a year before Thatcher came to power and while punk was at its peak. In an unremarkable estate club in Hulme in Manchester, musical history was being made with the beginnings of a weekly club night called ‘The Factory’. The rest of the story is now of course a modern folk tale, with most aspects of the Factory Records legend having been highlighted and unpicked in numerous TV documentaries and feature films. Apart from one major – and seriously unsung – player: The Russell Club itself.
So we’ve created a new litho print which shows off The Russell Club in its cultural heyday, when it played host to emerging talents like Joy Division and other early Factory Records acts. Situated on Royce Road (so named due to the site’s proximity to the original Rolls Royce factory) and flanked by the stupendously vast ‘Crescents’ estate, the entire area was eventually redeveloped as part of a grand scheme of urban renewal in the early 90s.
