The City of Sheffield Register Office formerly sat on a grassy banked area behind the Egg Box (now the Peace Gardens and St Paul's Hotel) and was host to at least 30,000 marriages in it’s 31 years of operation. It was demolished in 2004 as part of the wave of current redevelopment that Sheffield is still undergoing. It’s unique cylindrical rotunda design was a sight to behold and it was this characteristic and it’s main function that led to it’s affectionate naming as the ‘Wedding Cake’.
The view we present here is from across Arundel Gate where the building could be seen at it’s tallest, sprouting up from the banks and shrubs.
